Wasps come in myriad colours, everything from the familiar yellow-and-black to metallic blue. Some are solitary species that live without the benefit of a colony or group. Others, like yellow jackets and hornets, are social insects, meaning that they live in colonies and build large communal nests. Each species has its own unique characteristics.

One newly discovered species, a reddish-black wasp native to Thailand, is notable for the way it hunts cockroaches. First, it injects venom into a cockroach to incapacitate it. Then the wasp drags the paralysed cockroach back to its nest and lays eggs in its body. With time, larvae hatch from the eggs and consume the cockroach’s body. This disturbing practice inspired the name Ampulex dementor, reflecting the wasps’ similarity to the soul-sucking dementors in the Harry Potter book series.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a space laboratory and construction site that orbits around the Earth at an altitude of about 390 kilometres. Astronauts usually live on the ISS for six-month periods, although some sojourns last up to a year.

On the ISS, the astronauts’ work can be both difficult and diverse: tasks include challenging repair jobs and lengthy spacewalks. Therefore, it is important that the astronauts prepare themselves with specially designed routines before arriving at the space station. Such a regimen might include lifting weights, moving heavy objects, doing push-ups and pull-ups, running and cycling. This constant variation prepares astronauts for all the stresses and challenges they will encounter in space.

Once aboard the space station, these men and women need to continue their workouts, this time in little to no gravity. This situation presents some unique challenges, but scientists have developed many innovations to help astronauts stay in good shape. These include special shoes and new types of weight-lifting machines, treadmills and exercise bikes that all work without gravity. This physical activity is important because it helps address the detrimental effects of zero gravity, such as premature ageing and the loss of muscle mass and bone density.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr was one of the foremost figures during America’s civil rights movement. In fact, many consider him to be one of the greatest leaders of the twentieth century. He pushed for African Americans to have the same rights as white citizens, including equal access to both public and private facilities, such as schools, workplaces, shops and restaurants. Also a skilled orator, Dr King is perhaps best known for his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, which he delivered during the March on Washington in 1963.

While other civil rights groups at the time were willing to use ‘any means necessary’ to bring about change, Dr King was an advocate of non-violent action. He encouraged peaceful protest and was even awarded a Nobel Peace Prize at the strikingly young age of thirty-five. Sadly, Dr King was killed in 1968. Still, his message of equal rights for all people and his teachings of peace live on in posterity; in the years since, Americans have continued to work towards his dream.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

Pablo Picasso is often considered one of the greatest and most influential artists of the twentieth century. As a young child, Picasso displayed an exceptional talent for drawing and painting. His extraordinary skill allowed him to enter Barcelona’s prestigious School of Fine Arts when he was only fourteen years old—several years younger than the typical students at this well-regarded school. Although Picasso left Barcelona before graduating, the city still inspired him. His experiences there would lead him to break away from traditional ideas about art and create a new style that would change the world of art forever.

Picasso’s rise to prominence began in 1907. While living in Paris, he produced a painting that featured five Barcelonian women represented by sharply contrasting geometric shapes. Instead of a realistic representation of the women, the painting presented an abstract scene showing the women’s forms from multiple viewpoints at once. That the art world had never seen such a painting before only added to Picasso’s growing popularity. This painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, would serve as the inspiration for the artistic movement that came to be known as Cubism.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a space laboratory and construction site that orbits around the Earth at an altitude of about 390 kilometres.
