Metric mixed units
key notes :
πΉ What Are Metric Mixed Units?
Metric mixed units are measurements written using more than one metric unit for the same quantity.
β
Example: 1 m 25 cm, 3 kg 450 g, 2 L 300 mL
π 2. Metric Units Used in Mixed Measurements
| Quantity | Main Units | Smaller Units |
|---|---|---|
| Length β¨ | km, m | cm, mm |
| Mass βοΈ | kg | g |
| Capacity π§ | L | mL |
π Conversion Rules (Important!)
π Length
- 1 m = 100 cm
- 1 cm = 10 mm
- 1 km = 1000 m
βοΈ Mass
- 1 kg = 1000 g
π§ Capacity
- 1 L = 1000 mL
πΈ Why Use Mixed Units?
Mixed units help in showing precise measurements clearly.
π‘ Example: Instead of 125 cm, we say 1 m 25 cm for clarity.
π Changing Mixed Units to Single Units
π Add after converting to the same unit
Example:
2 m 30 cm = 2 m + 0.30 m = 2.30 m
OR
2 m 30 cm = 200 cm + 30 cm = 230 cm
β Changing Single Units to Mixed Units
Split the units into bigger and smaller units.
Example:
1450 g = 1 kg 450 g
2500 mL = 2 L 500 mL
π§ Quick Tip to Remember
β¨ βBreak or Joinβ Rule:
βοΈ Join units β convert to same unit then add
βοΈ Break units β divide into big + small unit
π§ͺ Examples
| Mixed Unit | As Single Unit |
|---|---|
| 3 m 75 cm | 375 cm |
| 4 kg 200 g | 4200 g |
| 1 L 650 mL | 1650 mL |
π Real-Life Uses
Metric mixed units are used in:
π° Cooking recipes
π Measuring height & length
π½ Body weight
π§ Liquid volumes (milk, juice, oil)
π Practice to Master!
Try converting:
a) 6 m 40 cm β ______ cm
b) 3500 mL β ______ L ______ mL
c) 2 kg 750 g β ______ g
Learn with an example
Convert:
7,518 g = —— kg——- g.
Find out how many kilograms are in 7,518 grams.
Divide:
7,518 Γ· 1,000 = 7 R518
There are 7 kilograms, with 518 grams left over.
7,518 g = 7 kg 518 g
Convert. Write your answer as a decimal.
5 kg 65 g = ———kg.
Convert the 65 grams to kilograms.
Divide:
65 Γ· 1,000 = 0.065
65 g = 0.065 kg
Now add this to the 5 kilograms you already have:
5 kg 65 g = 5 kg + 0.065 kg
5 kg 65 g = 5.065 kg
Convert:
431 cm = ——-m——– cm.
Find out how many metres are in 431 centimetres.
Divide:
431 Γ· 100 = 4 R31
There are 4 metres, with 31 centimetres left over.
431 cm = 4 m 31 cm
let’s practice!
