Multiplication with exponents

Design by Delta publications

An exponent tells us how many times a number is multiplied by itself.

  • Example: 23=2ร—2ร—2=8

Rule: When multiplying powers with the same base, add their exponents.

amร—an=am+n

Example:

  • 32ร—34=32+4=36=729

Rule: If the bases are different, you cannot add the exponents. Multiply the numbers separately.

Example:

23ร—53=(2ร—5)3=103=1000

โœ… Only works if the exponents are the same.

  • 1n=1 for any n
  • Example: 15ร—13=15+3=18=1
  • Always check if the base is the same before adding exponents.
  • If bases are different, keep them separate unless the exponent is the same.
  • Practice with numbers and variables: x2ร—x5=x7

๐Ÿ’ก Remember: Multiplication with exponents is about adding exponents for the same base and keeping exponents separate for different bases.
