Multiplication and division with exponents

An exponent tells how many times a number (called the base) is multiplied by itself.

  • ๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: 24=2ร—2ร—2ร—2=16

Here, 2 is the base and 4 is the exponent.

When bases are the same, add the exponents.

amร—an=am+n

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: 32ร—34=32+4=36=729

๐Ÿง  Remember: Base must be the same!

When bases are the same, subtract the exponents.

am/an=amโˆ’n

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: 57รท53=57โˆ’3=54=625

When you raise a power to another power, multiply the exponents.

(am)n=amร—n

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: (23)4=23ร—4=212

When multiplying two bases with an exponent outside, apply the exponent to each base.

(ab)m=amร—bm

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: (2ร—3)2=22ร—32=4ร—9=36

When dividing two bases with an exponent outside, apply the exponent to both numerator and denominator.

(a/b)m=am/bm

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: (4/2)3=43/23=64/8=8

  • Zero Exponent Rule: a0=1(aโ‰ 0)
  • Negative Exponent Rule: aโˆ’n=1/an

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: 2โˆ’3=1/23=1/8

โœ… Same base โ†’ Add or subtract exponents (depending on ร— or รท).

โœ… Different base โ†’ Apply exponent separately.

โœ… Power to power โ†’ Multiply exponents.

โœ… Always simplify at the end!
