Multiplication and division with exponents
Key Notes :
๐ Multiplication and Division with Exponents ๐
โณ๏ธ What are Exponents?
An exponent tells how many times a number (called the base) is multiplied by itself.
- ๐ Example: 24=2ร2ร2ร2=16
Here, 2 is the base and 4 is the exponent.
โด๏ธ Multiplying Powers with the Same Base
When bases are the same, add the exponents.
amรan=am+n
๐ Example: 32ร34=32+4=36=729
๐ง Remember: Base must be the same!
โณ๏ธ Dividing Powers with the Same Base
When bases are the same, subtract the exponents.
am/an=amโn
๐ Example: 57รท53=57โ3=54=625
โด๏ธ Power of a Power Rule
When you raise a power to another power, multiply the exponents.
(am)n=amรn
๐ Example: (23)4=23ร4=212
โณ๏ธ Power of a Product Rule
When multiplying two bases with an exponent outside, apply the exponent to each base.
(ab)m=amรbm
๐ Example: (2ร3)2=22ร32=4ร9=36
โด๏ธ Power of a Quotient Rule
When dividing two bases with an exponent outside, apply the exponent to both numerator and denominator.
(a/b)m=am/bm
๐ Example: (4/2)3=43/23=64/8=8
โณ๏ธ Zero and Negative Exponents
- Zero Exponent Rule: a0=1(aโ 0)
- Negative Exponent Rule: aโn=1/an
๐ Example: 2โ3=1/23=1/8
๐ก Quick Tips to Remember
โ Same base โ Add or subtract exponents (depending on ร or รท).
โ Different base โ Apply exponent separately.
โ Power to power โ Multiply exponents.
โ Always simplify at the end!

Learn with an example
Simplify. Express your answer as a single term, without a denominator.
t2.t4 / t6
First, simplify the numerator.
t2.t4 / t6
t2+4 / t6 –> Multiply, remembering to add the exponents
t6 / t6
The numerator is simplified. Now, divide the numerator by the denominator.
t6-6 —> Divide, remembering to subtract the exponents
t0= 1 –> Any number to the zeroth power is equal to one.
t2.t4 / t6 = 1
Simplify. Express your answer as a single term, without a denominator.
a3.a4.a5
Simplify.
a3.a4.a5
a3+4+5 —> Multiply, remembering to add the exponents
a12
Simplify. Express your answer as a single term, without a denominator.
v4 / v7.v5
First, simplify the denominator.
v4 / v7.v5
v4 / v7+5 —>Multiply, remembering to add the exponents
v4/v12
The denominator is simplified. Now, divide the numerator by the denominator.
v4-12 —> Divide, remembering to subtract the exponents
v-8
