What is an Appositive?

👉 An appositive is a noun or pronoun that comes right after another noun or pronoun to explain or rename it.

Example:

  • My brother, Ravi, is a doctor. 🧑‍⚕️
    (Here Ravi is an appositive; it renames “my brother.”)
What is an Appositive Phrase?

👉 An appositive phrase includes the appositive and the words that describe it.

Example:

  • The rose, a beautiful red flower 🌹, bloomed in the garden.
    (Appositive phrase = a beautiful red flower)
How to Identify Them?

1️⃣ Look for a noun that renames another noun.
2️⃣ Check if the phrase gives extra information about the noun.
3️⃣ Notice that appositives are often set off by commas (,).
