Round decimals and mixed numbers
Key Notes :
1. Rounding Decimals:
- Definition: Rounding a decimal means approximating it to a certain number of decimal places or significant figures.
- Rules for Rounding Decimals:
- Look at the digit in the place value you are rounding to:
- If the digit is 5 or greater, round up.
- If the digit is less than 5, round down (or keep the digit the same).
- Look at the digit in the place value you are rounding to:
- Example: Round 3.876 to two decimal places.
- Look at the third decimal place (6). Since 6 is greater than 5, round the second decimal place (7) up to 8.
- Answer: 3.88.
2. Rounding Mixed Numbers:
- Definition: A mixed number consists of a whole number and a fraction. To round a mixed number, you round the fractional part and then simplify the whole number if needed.
- Steps for Rounding Mixed Numbers:
- Round the fractional part of the mixed number to the required decimal or fraction.
- Adjust the whole number if necessary (depending on the rounding of the fractional part).
- Example: Round 2 7/8 to the nearest whole number.
- Convert the fraction to a decimal: 7/8 = 0.875.
- Round 0.875 to the nearest whole number (which is 1 since it is greater than 0.5).
- Answer: 3 (2 + 1 = 3).
